NHS FREE Eye Test at AMS Ophthalmic Opticians
An eye examination is not simply about getting glasses - it's also a vital health check. That is why the NHS provides free eye tests to customers who qualify for them (please see below). At AMS, our qualified professionals will make you feel comfortable during your visit and ensure that every step of the eye examination process is fully explained. A summary on the health of your eyes will be provided at the end of the examination.
Who qualifies for a free NHS eye test?
The following people qualify:

Under 16, or under 19 years of age and in full time education

Aged 60 or over (from age 60-70 it is one test every 24 months and over 70 it is one test every 12 months)

Registered blind or partially sighted

Diagnosed as having diabetes or glaucoma

40 years of age or over with a first degree relative with glaucoma, or you have been advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma

Prescribed a complex lens
You are also entitled to a free NHS eye test if you (or your partner) are receiving the following benefits or credits:
Income Support or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance (not contribution based)
Working Tax Credit and are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
Child Tax Credit and are named on a Tax Credit NHS Exemption Certificate
You are named on a NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2)
Please bring your proof of entitlement when you attend your eye test as you will be asked to provide it.

Who is entitled to a free NHS sight test?
- Under 16's
- Under 19's in full-time education
- Over 60's
- Anyone on low income support, income-based job seekers allowance, working families tax credit or disabled persons tax credit
- People who require certain complex lenses
- Anyone with glaucoma or diabetes
- Over 40's brother, sister or child of someone with glaucoma
