Children's Eye Care

Having your children’s eyes examined from an early age is vital; they should be having regular eye examinations before they start school. Our Optometrists carry out thorough eye examinations to assess general eye health and quality of sight. They can produce prescriptions when required for children of eight years of age and older; this is done outside the health board system. At primary school, your child’s eyesight should be assessed by the local health board. If further action is required they will be referred for examination at the local health board clinic or hospital. Both of these tests are free.

Health Board entitlements as well as a free eye examination, if your child needs glasses, they will also qualify for a health board voucher, which enables them to choose a free frame from a selected range. Or, for an additional payment, they can select frames from our other, all available at an affordable price.

Choosing your child’s glasses

All of our children’s glasses are made to the highest standards with their safety in mind; all lenses are scratch resistant and include UV protection. For even greater protection for your child’s eyes you can choose polycarbonate lenses. These lenses are available as a special order at an additional cost, and are virtually unbreakable.

When choosing frames for your child we will be on hand to offer expert advice. As well as ensuring the frame fits their face perfectly, your child needs to feel involved in the selection process - if they like their glasses they will be happy wearing them!

These days’ children are more fashion conscious than ever, which is why we have the latest frame styles and Designer names available in all stores.

Caring for your child’s glasses

Children’s glasses take a lot of ‘wear and tear’ but if you teach your child to follow the simple steps below it will help prolong the life of their glasses.

  • Glasses should always be taken off with both hands to stop them bending out of shape.
  • Don’t put glasses face down onto any surface as this may scratch the lenses.
  • Always keep glasses in their case when not wearing them.
  • Clean glasses daily for clearer vision.
